What is SEO? The Simple Explanation.

Have you heard the words ‘search engine optimisation’ and wondered what it is, what it does, and why marketers bang on about it all the time? If so, you’ve landed in the right place because I’m going to break it down for you without the nonsense.

If you have a website but you aren’t being seen on Google, or you are there, but you’re pages and pages in, then its likely down to your SEO. SEO is all about making sure your website gets found by the right people, at the right time. And if you own a business or are just starting to build your online presence, SEO can be the difference between being invisible and being in demand.

What exactly is SEO?

SEO is about visibility. Think of search engines like Google as if they were matchmakers. Someone types a query into the search engine looking for their soul mate, and its Google’s jobs to connect them with the best possible match for their request, but they wont just match the query with anyone, they will only match them with honest, reputable, and trustworthy sources…aka your prince charming! They want to match you with ‘serious daters’ who are offering exactly what you are searching for. No nonsense, no swiping! 😆

SEO is a set of tools that come under the same umbrella which gives search engines the right signals to choose your site as the one to show first. If you’re giving off neggy vibes, chatting rubbish, or if you’re full of….well unreliable information, then you’re at the bottom of the list.

Think of it like this:

SEO tells Google what your site is about.

SEO shows that your stuff (content) is relevant and helpful.

SEO builds trust, so search engines feel confident enough to recommend you.

Get your SEO right and you’ll show higher on the list which mean more people will see you. And as the old marketing joke goes: the best place to hide a dead body is on page two of Google. Funny, but true!

Why SEO matters for you

The simple truth is that most people don’t look past the first page of Google, so if your business isn’t there, you’re missing out on HUGE potential.

SEO helps you:

Reach your ideal (target) audience.

Build your credibility.

Save a fortune on ads.

Grow sustainability so you are visible for the long run.

Short version- SEO is your smartest marketing investment.

Let’s look at the main areas of SEO…

  1. ON-page SEO

This is all about what’s actually on your website pages and it includes:

  • Using the right keywords (the words your audience type into Google).
  • Writing clear, helpful content.
  • Structuring pages so they’re easy to read (both for people and for Google).

Think of it like decorating a shop window. Arranging things so it’s clear what you sell and why someone should come in.

  1. Off-Page SEO

This is what happens outside your website to build authority and trust. The main factor here is links. When other reputable websites link to yours, Google sees it as a vote of confidence. Social media mentions, reviews, and PR also help boost your reputation.

In shop terms: it’s like word-of-mouth. If everyone’s talking about your store, more people will want to check it out.

  1. Technical SEO

This is the behind-the-scenes part. Scary name, I know, but it basically covers things like making sure your site loads quickly, works well on mobile, and is easy for Google to “crawl” (find, scan and understand).

In shop terms: it’s like making sure your doors open smoothly without the creaks, your lights are on and not flickering, and the shelves are in order without any nails sticking out! (Can you tell I’m not a DIY person?!)

SEO Starting Points for Beginners

You don’t need to be an expert to get things started, and small things can make a difference. Try these few steps to begin with:

Clear titles and headings: Each page should explain what it’s about in plain language, and you should also include keywords in headings/titles.

Write for people, not robots: DO NOT overdo your keywords! Google will be able to tell and trust me; it won’t end well. Just write in a way that people will understand, and answer questions that they genuinely ask.

Mobile first: Most searches happen on phones. If your site doesn’t work well on mobile, you’re losing visitors.

Google Business Profile: If you have a local business, this is essential for showing up on maps and local searches.

Long Term SEO

SEO is not a quick, overnight fix, it’s a long-term strategy. But the brilliant thing is that once you are there and have taken the right steps, the results can continue to grow. One of my clients was initially on page 3 of Google but after a few months of consistent blogging (by yours truly) she is now not just on page one…she’s NUMBER 1 on Google! And this is what your customers will see!

SEO in general is about building digital trust. Think of it like laying the foundations of a house: every blog post, every update, and every tweak to your site adds another brick. Over time, those bricks stack up into something strong and reliable. With a solid foundation in place, your visibility grows steadily and is far less likely to crumble.
